The Where of Despair
Despair does not derive from an inner condition, but from a relationship between the world and me. It resides in three chasms. The first is the chasm between who the world thinks I should be, and who I want to be, and am able to be. The second is the chasm between my manner of being in the world and the well-spring of my desire. The third is the chasm between the world as it is and a world in which I would wish to live. In short, the root cause of despair is that I misfit the world which I am required to inhabit.
